Professional Development Class- Vocabulary for The Modern Day Classroom

Midwest Teachers Institute
Graduate Level Professional Development Courses for Teachers

Midwest Teachers Institute is national provider of inexpensive and university-accredited K-12 teacher professional development.  It was founded by teachers, who strive to provide exceptional learning opportunities at very reasonable prices.

I am so, so, so excited to be checking off another item on my professional bucket list.  I wrote a graduate course for teachers that got approved and will be teaching the online version.  It's called Vocabulary for the Modern Day Classroom: K-12 Strategies for ELL/ESL, Content Areas, and Beyond.  It begins on March 30, and there is still time to sign up.  Everything is run and turned in online, so you have the flexibility to work from home within a schedule that works for you.

Teaching vocabulary is my passion.  My intention with this class is to provide teachers and school staff at all levels and in all areas with quick and easy strategies they can use to motivate and encourage students to work with words and build their vocabulary.  There are games and activities for introducing words, practicing with words, and assessments.  I've also included several of my own examples and templates from activities that I have successfully used in my own classroom.

This is not a "read the text, answer questions, and write a 10-page paper" class.  It's purpose is to get you creating and developing real, engaging, and meaningful vocabulary and language experiences for your students.  These activities have transformed my teaching and my students' attitudes about learning vocabulary and working with words.  Click to view the syllabus for this class-MTI 595 or to view the MTI lineup of online classes.

5th Grade Reading Street Vocabulary Resources

I've been teaching 5th grade for quite some time, and vocabulary instruction is one of my favorite times of the day.  About 5 years ago, I got a Masters Degree in Reading Instruction, and it changed the way that I approached teaching vocabulary.   Students don't learn and use new words by doing basic skill and drill vocabulary worksheets or "write the definition."  They have to interact with words, make connections with them, and want to use them.  I have created sets of activities and games to use with all 30 5th Grade Reading Street stories.  They are highly rated (by students and teachers).  Feel free to check out the feedback.  If you're looking for activities to supplement your curriculum, give these a shot.  If you do, I'd love to hear what you and your students thought.

Here's how things are set up:

* Each story has an individual listing.  They are named by the story's title.
* There is a set for each of the 6 units that includes all 5 individual stories.
* There is a complete set of all 30 stories from all 6 units.

Click here to go to the homepage that has all of the materials.

Christmas Games, Writing, Math, and More

This is definitely one of my favorite times of the year to be a teacher.  There are so many fun, educational (and some just fun) things to do in the classroom.  People are happy, the air smells of hot cocoa at least once a week (thanks to some amazing parents), and the snow brings on such excitement.

As our two week break gets closer, there are some activities that I like to do to keep the kiddos interested and motivated in the classroom.  You can find all of these activities in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  Use this link to go directly to the Christmas Resources page.  You can click on any of the links or pictures below to go directly to the product pages also.

Thanksgiving Taboo and Scattergories Games

I LOVE games.  I created these two games based off the board games Scattergories and Taboo.  These are super for small groups, centers, or whole class.  Both provide great oral language practice and can be beneficial for students learning the English language.

Guided Reading and Literacy Center Schedule

Guided Reading and Center time is precious.  Keeping students informed on where to go, what to do, and when it should happen can be a huge time-sucker.  It can cut right into your sacred group time.

I decided to create a schedule that can be displayed on my board and easily changed out every day to keep student aware of what the day's guided reading and literacy schedule would be.  After introducing how it would work, we practiced a few times, and students quickly got the hang of it.  No longer did I have to worry about interruptions during guided reading groups or while meeting with students with questions such as "Where do I go?"  and "When do I go to _____?"  To get your materials, click on any of the links or pictures below.

Motivating Students to Write and A Writing FREEBIE

Let's start the weekend off right with a FREEBIE.  I was just thinking about how some kiddos struggle to write, and for lots of different reasons.  Sometimes it's tricky to come up with a topic to write about.  Sometimes it's just because they're not interested in writing.  Sometimes it's because they don't have the confidence in themselves :(.  Sometimes they are distracted, and sometimes they just aren't motivated.  (The list could go on and on.)  This didn't necessarily work for all of my students, but I turned my Book Nook into a Book Nook/Writer's Craft Area.

I created a "bulletin board" by hanging butcher roll paper on the wall and hot gluing upside down clothes pins to it.  This was the area where students would see their peers' work displayed.  Some students were more motivated because they knew their work could make it on the wall, and others were motivated because they got to choose which pieces would be displayed.

After putting up the bulletin board, I created a work space, made up of student desks and stools from IKEA.  On top of the desks, I had containers with pencils, red pens, highlighters, post-it notes, dictionaries and thesauruses, erasers, and staplers.  All of these items could be used for creating and editing work.  (I also put the same objects in 6 different zipper bags labeled Writing Kit so that students could use them anywhere in the classroom.

Writing became a completely different event in my classroom.  It was a time when we would turn on some music, students had the choice of where they wanted to sit in the room to get their writing minds focused, and they created amazing pieces of writing.  Students started helping each other out.  Sometimes they'd ask each other for help with spelling or for a suggestion using a different word.  I didn't even mind that sometimes students started to have conversations that took away from their actual writing.  Usually it was about their writing, which made it even more powerful.  They completely took control of their writing and took pride in what they were doing.  Editing became second nature, and they looked forward to scouring through the thesaurus to create a list of "better" words that they'd write on a post-it and come back to later when they were ready to make a choice.  It was transformational!

Then...the best part for my students... I set out a binder with plastic sleeves.  In each plastic sleeve I put 15 pages of decorative writing paper.  They could use this paper to create their final drafts.  They LOVED being able to flip through the binder to choose which type of paper they could use.  I was amazed at how much longer and "juicier" their writing became.  (Hint: On the last page in each sleeve I used a post-it and wrote Last Copy...Do Not use...Turn In to Teacher).

So, sometimes it's not the content or the lack of understanding, it's just a change in the environment that our students need to help them along.  I know I enjoy a change in the environment every so often, usually in the form of a vacation or just a simple rearranging of furniture in my bedroom.

So anyway, I have a sample set of holiday themed writing paper available for FREE in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  My students really enjoyed it, and I'd love to share it with you are your little (or big) writers.  It might be just what you need to get the holiday writing complete.  If you happen to download it, I'd love to hear your feedback.  Happy Writing!!!
